The Performance of Being Human

At what point did we stop simply living and start performing? Not performing in the obvious sense. Not standing on a stage, reading lines, or pretending to be someone we are not. Something much more subtle has happened. We have learned to become versions of ourselves. From the moment we enter the world, we begin receiving signals about who we are supposed to be. We learn what earns approval, what creates rejection, what makes us valuable, and what makes us invisible. We learn how to speak. How to dress. How to behave. How to succeed. How to be desirable. How to be taken seriously. Eventually, these performances become so natural that we forget they are performances at all. We mistake the role for the person. What the Hell Is This Life?

Have you ever stopped and wondered, What the hell is this life? And I don't mean the meaning of life on some grand, cosmic level. I'm not asking why we exist or what our ultimate purpose might be. What I'm asking is much more immediate: What is this life that you and I are actually living? We're born into a world that has already decided, long before we arrive, how we're supposed to interact with it. From infancy, we're taught a set of rules that shape what we're allowed to do, what we're encouraged to think, and even what we're permitted to believe. Of course, the specifics vary. The place you're born, the culture you inherit, and the socioeconomic circumstances of the people who raise you all shape the particular version of reality you're handed.
